In 1980, the San Antonio Spurs drafted Calvin Roberts in the 4th round, as the 83rd overall pick in the NBA Draft. Two years earlier Roberts found himself matched up against one of the NBA greats as his Cal State Fullerton Titans took on Magic Johnson and the Michigan State Spartans.
Roberts still remembers the highlight of his career as he blocked Magic’s shot that day. After being selected by the Spurs Roberts bounced around to a few NBA teams but was never able to stay on the roster.
He decided to take his talents overseas and play professionally in Europe. Roberts played 15 seasons in Spain, Italy, Turkey, Istanbul, and even was on a championship team in Austria. Calvin returned to the USA after his playing days were over with in Europe.
Now 61, Calvin Roberts is still pursuing his NBA career. The NBA Summer league is right around the corner and Roberts has his sights on playing. Roberts has been living in the gym since January, lifting weights and conditioning himself to be ready for a tryout should a team ever call. On top of training, Roberts has personally sent out letters to NBA teams in which he thinks he can contribute to.
His love for the game returned when he moved to Las Vegas back in 2014 when he felt his talents matched up to some of the other athletes in the NBA Summer League.
One thing about Roberts is that he isn’t oblivious to the challenges that are ahead of him if he wants to play in the Summer League. Being 61 alone has it’s challenges, but that isn’t going to stop Roberts from chasing his dream.
“I know I’m getting older, I know that. I’m not saying I’m not thinking of that, but I just feel in my body and my heart, I’m still in good shape. And as long as there is an NBA team out there that may be interested, I’m going to keep pushing the issue. I’m going to keep driving myself to where I’m going to make an impression on somebody that may give me a shot or come practice with them, but I’m not giving up.”
