Ataribox: Atari’s Newest Gaming Console

Atari’s newest gaming console combines retro and next-gen gaming

Atari’s newest gaming console has pretty much been a myth up to this point. Now Atari has released the name of the consoles and a bunch of pictures to go with it. The Ataribox will be Atari’s attempt to get into the retro-gaming console market.

Not much is really know about the Ataribox. Atari teased us with a video back in the spring about their new project.

The Ataribox will have the same look as the original Atari 2600 that was released back in 1977, but much smaller in size. The Ataribox will also feature other features that have evolved gaming systems over the past 40 years:

  • HDMI port
  • 4 USB ports
  • SD memory card slot

You’ll be able to buy it with the retro wood on black finish or a more modern black on red finish. Also, the front panel can be wood or glass.

Is Atari’s Newest Gaming Console Also Next-Gen?

It sounds like Atari doesn’t plan on having the Ataribox to be only a retro gaming console. Atarie has stated that internal hardware will have modern specs to offer current gaming content.

The specifics on the Ataribox are still a mystery. There hasn’t been any news on a timetable, the games, or pricing.

Atari might be able to develop their own niche in the gaming market with the Ataribox. With the massive retro library with the likes of Pacman, Space Invaders, and Centipede combined with the modern gaming capabilities, the Ataribox could be a hit with gamers.

It really all depends on how Atari approaches the market with this project. Is it going to compete with Sony and Microsoft? Probably not. That doesn’t mean the Ataribox can’t find its place between retro and next-gen gaming systems.

Feel free to leave a comment and let me know your thoughts on the Ataribox.
