Martha the Mastiff defied the odds this past June as she took the title as the 2017 World’s Ugliest Dog. A crown that usually goes to tiny, hairless, older and smaller dogs.
The contestants are not just judge on how ugly they look, but personality, unusual attributes, crowd reaction, and personality play a part in who wins the award.
The World’s Ugliest Dog contest isn’t just about bringing these ugly mutts together and crowning one the champ. The contest promotes animal adoption and rescue. Most of the contestants if not all are former rescued dogs.
Martha herself is a rescue dog that was all but blind until she was adopted. It took several surgeries for Martha to get her sight back.
Martha the Mastiff Steals the Show
When Martha instantly won over the crowd at this year’s competition the moment she took the stage. Instead of performing impressive tricks, Martha defiantly plopped herself down on the stage and started drooling.
Martha let the crowd know she had no intentions on wowing them as her loose and dangling jowls laid there on the stage. Her disobedience, snoring, and slobbering were key factors that went into Martha winning the contest.
Big Hearts for Ugly Faces
For winning the contest Martha’s owner received $1,500, a trophy, and a trip to New York for media appearances.
It takes a big heart from these owners to rescue and care for these pups. Events like these are great for the animal community that have dealt with many homeless and euthanizing because of backed up shelters.
Dogs, even ugly ones, like these deserve healthy and happy lives and it’s nice to see there are people out there who care. I think at the end of the day, she is a beautiful beast that only a mother could love.
